MIXI was considering replacing its existing authentication system and was looking into a two-factor authentication solution for PCs. This time, we will talk about the issues they faced, the process of product selection, and the details of the implementation in a Q&A format with the person in charge.

■ What issues did you have?
The person in charge:
In some cases, multiple people share the same account on the same PC. So we needed a system to prevent the risk of password sharing and identify PC users. Before YubiOn, we were using another solution. But updates had ended and we were no longer able to continue receiving support.
■ Please tell us how you chose YubiOn products while considering other products.
The person in charge:
The existing solution used vein authentication. While we were looking for other authentication methods, the physical authentication device "YubiKey" came up as an alternative option. YubiKey has already been used as a 2FA (two-factor authentication) for tolls other than PCs, and I came across your YubiOn solution while searching for ways to utilize it.
■ What was the key in deciding on the product?

The key points were that the product is compatible with Windows and macOS, and can be managed through a portal website.
Smooth implementation without burdening users
■ How was the initial implementation carried out?
The person in charge:
Since we needed to replace our existing solution, the IT department did all the setup and configuration of the devices. All we had to do was explain to employees how to use it. So it wasn't a big burden.
■ Please tell us if there were any difficulties or points you paid attention to during implementation.
The person in charge:
Since detailed policy settings are possible, it wasn't easy to decide how to operate it. There are plenty of instructions for installation, and the installation itself is easy. So we were able to handle it smoothly.
■ How is the operation after the initial installation?
At present, it works without any problems. Since small authentication devices are used, it is easy to imagine that they will be forgotten or lost. We have prepared a response flow for lost items and other issues in advance, and have an operational system that allows us to respond quickly when an incident occurs.

■ Did the implementation of YubiOn Portal solve your problems?
The person in charge:
A major issue with the existing solution was that it would no longer support macOS in the future and was not able to quickly adapt to the latest OSs. But the YubiOn Portal supports macOS and will continue to do so in the future. So these issues were resolved.
■ What are the benefits of the implementation from your perspective as an administrator?
The person in charge:
Previously, management of who could use which PC was based on a ledger. But since we switched to YubiOn, we can now manage it through the portal. This has eliminated the worry of missing updates to the ledger, and it is good that we can always check the latest and correct status.
■ What is the feedback from people who use it?
The person in charge:
Regarding Windows, the existing solution did not allow remote desktops. However, with the implementation of YubiOn, it became possible, which made us very happy.
■ Are there any areas you would like us to improve?
The person in charge:
Overall, we are satisfied. However, there are differences in the login methods between macOS and Windows. So I would be happy if they could be unified.

By implementing YubiOn Portal, we have been able to strengthen the security of our devices. At this stage, it has only been partially introduced. The reason we chose YubiOn Portal is that our existing solution no longer supports macOS. We are well aware that it will depend on the OS. But we believe that if it continues to adapt to the latest OS, we will be able to use it for a long time to come.
